<br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />December 2015 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o Based on popularity of the Lateral X cardio machine, a second was added to the cardio section of <br />the Fitness Center at NBCC. <br />o Women’s volleyball was held each Wednesday in December with 56 participants each week. <br />o Drop-in Pickleball at Highview School averaged 23 adult participants each Tuesday in December. <br />o 26 adults 55+ attended a 4-hour AARP Smart Driver’s Safety Class. <br />o 24 Club 55 members attended a holiday party. <br />o 30 adults 55+ attended an Education and Enrichment workshop on Healthy Bones and Joints. <br />o 12 adults attended the Education and Enrichment workshop on Hospice care. <br />o 31 adults 55+ from St. Anthony, Roseville and New Brighton enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at <br />the American Swedish Institute. <br />o 5 participants from teens to adults were trained in CPR/AED and First Aid skills to be prepared to <br />assist in emergencies. <br />o 71 participants enrolled in group fitness activities during December. <br />o 15 rounds of golf were played in December at Brightwood Hills, on temporary greens, bringing <br />the total number of rounds up to 22,136 for the year. <br /> <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o NBCC was a successful recipient of a Recycling Grant from the Ramsey County Health Department in <br />the amount of $19,515. A NBCC match/contribution of $1,731.31 went towards twenty-seven new and <br />attractive recycling containers. These units will be distributed through-out NBCC individual rooms and <br />general areas. The containers will designate and separate recyclables from trash, helping patrons to <br />become more responsible stewards of our environment. <br />o Tree trimming is being performed by city contractors and city staff in different neighborhoods to allow <br />safe passage of large vehicles i.e. fire trucks and plow trucks. <br /> <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o Swimming allows youth the opportunity to experience challenge, fun, and enjoyment while <br />increasing their self-esteem and decreasing their stress. Did you know the Parks and Recreation <br />Department is now accepting registrations for the Winter Swimming Lessons Program for anyone <br />ages 6 months and older? <br />o Parent night was held at Irondale H.S. on December 16 to showcase gymnastic skills. Over 100 <br />participants and parents were in attendance. <br />o The annual holiday dance show was held at Highview School on December 9 with 66 dancers <br />(ages 3-10) and over 175 spectators attending. <br />o 43 students attended Little Tigers Martial Arts and Karate each Monday in December. <br />o Adaptive bowling was held on Saturdays in December with 28 youth and young adults attending <br />each week. <br /> <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o Staff emailed activity flyers to youth currently in classes reminding them to sign up for winter <br />programs and purchase gift certificates at the front desk. <br />o Staff continues to review various recreation software programs comparing options and pricing. <br /> <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o A new sledding hill light is being installed at Silver Oaks Park. Residents in the neighborhood <br />requested a light be added to the park to allow children to safely sled after dark. <br /> <br />PARKS & RECREATION UPDATES If you would like to receive parks and recreation updates on a monthly basis via <br />email, you may sign up on the city website at www.newbrightonmn.gov.
