<br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />February 2016 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o Collette Travel presented a show on an international trip to Ireland. There were 3 participants and <br />all three booked the trip. These are the first bookings with Collette. <br />o 66 adults 55+ have participated in the AARP Smart Driver Safety Classes in February. <br />o As of February 22, 89 adults 55+ have enrolled as Club 55 Members. <br />o During the month of February the NBCC has averaged 8 Pickle ball players a session. An <br />addition session was added to the gym schedule mornings from 9:00-11:00am. <br />o Highview pickleball on Tues. and Thur., 6:00-8:30pm, had an average attendance of 20 per night. <br />o Karate classes were held on Mondays at the NBCC for 44 youth and adults participating. <br />o 9 adults attended guitar, Swing Dance and Fly Tying classes at the NBCC. <br />o 26 young adults and teens bowled each week at Flaherty’s Arden Bowl on Sundays in the <br />adaptive recreation bowling program. <br />o 8 teams (56 players) participated in the Wed. Women’s volleyball league at Highview School. <br />o 283 participants enjoyed group fitness classes at NBCC. <br />o New Brighton Parks and Recreation partnered with the Change of Heart program through <br />American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign that provides education on women <br />and heart disease. The main event was a Zumba party on Saturday, February 13 with 88 <br />participants, and an additional 14 instructors, totaling 102 individuals packing the NBCC <br />Gymnasium. Overall, there were 88 donors that gave a total of $1780. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o Trimming of bushes and trees in alleys has been completed. <br />o All trees found on the 2015 disease tree survey have been removed. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o The Eagles Nest hosted an Adventure Day on Presidents Day, February 15. A total of 396 youth <br />daily admissions were sold compared to last year’s 375. Children were treated to a list of <br />activities: Scooters, a game of tot football target practice, coloring of an eight-foot mural, face <br />painting and a book fair sponsored by USBORNE Books. <br />o 24 youth, ages 5-8, attended ice skating lessons at Freedom Park in February. <br />o 55 girls and boys, ages 4-12, attended gymnastic classes each Monday at Irondale High School. <br />o 70 youth, ages 3-10 participated in dance classes at the NBCC each Wednesday in February. <br />o 60 youth, ages 3-14 participated in indoor soccer camps. <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o America's local and regional public park agencies generated nearly $140 billion in economic <br />activity in 2013. Did you know recreation programs and the Eagles Nest help generate economic <br />activity in New Brighton? <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o The ice rink season came to an end following activity on Monday February 15. With staggered <br />openings at all three parks the “official” open and close dates for this season were January 2 – <br />February 15 which accounts for 45 days of winter fun. Typically there is a 65 day long season. <br />The total attendance at all three parks was 5481 visitors with Freedom totaling 2745, Hansen <br />1504 and Sunny Square at 1232. The Friends of Sunny Square deserve a thank you for their work <br />staffing the neighborhood center during the skating season. <br />o The Parks Department will be receiving new equipment in 2016. A 2016 F150 4X4 pickup to <br />Forestry, a 2016 John Deere 1600 Turbo wide area mower to Parks and a 2016 Toro Reelmaster <br />3100D (fairway mower) for the Golf Course. <br /> <br />PARKS & RECREATION UPDATES If you would like to receive parks and recreation updates on a monthly basis via <br />email, you may sign up on the city website at www.newbrightonmn.gov.
