Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />July 2016 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o According to a Hostra University study, 82% of mothers believe that outdoor play increases their <br />child's self-worth. Did you know that we can’t agree more and provide 15 outdoor areas for <br />children and adults to play? These areas include playgrounds, athletic fields, trails and picnic <br />facilities. <br />o There were 32 adults 55+ in three AARP Smart Drivers classes this month. <br />o Participants 55+ from New Brighton, St. Anthony and Roseville enjoyed a trip to Skyrock Farms. <br />o 173 participants enrolled in group fitness programs. <br /> <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o Approximately 30 volunteers from Astra Zeneca Corporation helped Park staff with the removal of <br />buckthorn from Hidden Oaks Park. Staff cut the buckthorn while volunteers helped to pull it out of the <br />woods and pile it. In total 140 cubic yards of buckthorn was removed. <br />o Eagle Scouts completed the following projects: 21 Wood duck houses, built and installed throughout city; <br />Large planting at entrance of Innsbruck Park and 12 Blue bird houses built and installed at Hansen Park. <br /> <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o New Brighton Parks & Recreation Department celebrated National Parks and Recreation Month <br />by teaming up with the Ramsey County Library, New Brighton Branch to create “Super Hero <br />Day” on Tuesday, July 12th. Children enjoyed the Eagles Nest Indoor Playground, created super <br />hero crafts, modeled their crafts by posing for a picture in the sky and attempted to leap across <br />tall buildings on the super hero obstacle course. Mad Science provided three super hero themed <br />workshops. Brightwood Hills also joined the fun by allowing juniors to play the course <br />throughout the day at no charge. <br />o Officer Slack met with the Ed-Venture Day Care children and talked about bullying. <br />o Ed-Venture Day Care participants visited French Regional Park to climb cargo nets and hike <br />trails. <br />o Children from Ed-Venture Day Care biked from Freedom to Long Lake Park for a picnic. <br />o A field trip to the St. Louis Park Aquatic Center was taken by Ed-Venture Day Care participants. <br />o Tennis classes were held at Pike Lake and Hansen Park in July with 25 children participating. <br />o Dance families watched as 66 dance participants, ages 3-10, displayed tap, jazz and ballet skills <br />on July 27. <br />o Kayak and Canoe Paddling Camps were held at Long Lake from July 11-22. 18 youth ages 10- <br />14 participated. The Rice Creek Boat Club co-sponsors the camp. <br />o 100 participants enjoyed morning swim lessons. <br />o 12 enrolled in outdoor basketball skills camp. <br /> <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o Eagles Nest attendance soared with the warm weather during the week of July 18-24. During the similar <br />time period the Eagles Nest attendance was 440 in 2015 compare to 1,010 in 2016. <br /> <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o There are more than 6,000 Dairy Queen restaurants in the United States, Canada and 18 other <br />countries. Did you know the Dairy Queen on Old Highway 8 will donate 10% of its sales on <br />Tuesday, August 16 to the Parks and Recreation Scholarship Fund? Treat yourself on August 16 <br />at the Old Highway 8 Dairy Queen and support a good cause. <br />o 6 participants enrolled to become fully trained as Water Safety Instructors. <br />o A practice bunker has been installed at Brightwood Hills.
