<br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />August 2016 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o Exercise significantly reduces the chance for heart problems, according to studies from the CDC. <br />Did you know NBCC offers memberships to utilize fitness equipment and participate in group <br />fitness classes that will help reduce your chance for heart problems? <br />o 27 teams are currently participating in the fall softball leagues. A total of 324 players are visiting <br />New Brighton each week. <br />o 155 participants enjoyed group fitness classes at the NBCC. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o The shade tree disease survey has been completed. A total of 18 red oaks with oakwilt and 26 elms with <br />Dutch elm disease were found. <br />o Trimming has been completed in alleys throughout the city. <br />o Buckthorn removal at Hidden Oaks was a success with buckthorn removed from over 2 acres of land. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o 65% of Americans do not know how to swim. Did you know New Brighton Parks and <br />Recreation offers 35 different aquatics courses in the month of September to teach people to <br />swim for both safety and fun? <br />o 48 participants learned to swim in the final summer swim session. <br />o 25 youth participants enjoyed sports camps. <br />o 58 children attended the last summer class of gymnastics at Irondale High School on August 1. <br />o 42 Ed-Venture Day Care children visited Hansen Park on August 5 to play foot golf. <br />o 39 Ed-Venture Day Care children visited the Bunker Hills for a hay ride and pony rides. <br />o 42 children attended the Ed-Venture trip to Zero Gravity Trampoline Park in Mounds View. <br />o 11 children attended beginning tennis lessons at Hansen Park. <br />o The final two trips for the Ed-Venture Day Care Program took children on an urban hike to get <br />ice cream treats and visit the Raptor Center. <br />o Brightwood Hills Golf Course had 131 Junior Golfers in the Monday and Thursday program, the <br />Junior Scramble had 28 participants and the annual Junior Tournament hosted 54 juniors. <br />o The high temperature and dew points on August 19 & 20 also made the Eagles Nest a hot place <br />with over 1,100 admissions between daily admissions, groups and birthday parties <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o 51 junior golfers from all over the Twin Cities visited our golf course and city in late July for the <br />Minnesota Section PGA Transition Tour. <br />o The Stockyard Days “Corral” Open was held in early August with 72 participants. <br />o Seven RFQ’s for Recreation Software were sent out in August. Three software quotes were <br />received. <br />o Preventative maintenance at the NBCC was conducted to maintain the integrity of the brick at the <br />south entrance of the building. Tuck pointing was performed to lower courses where motor joints <br />between the bricks have weakened from years of exposure to salt and weather conditions. <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o Approximately 350 parents, participants and volunteer coaches attended the annual Soccer <br />(sponsored by Dairy Queen on Old Hwy 8) and Youth Baseball (sponsored by Culvers of St. <br />Anthony) end of the season social where we exchange pictures and coaches return equipment and <br />socialize. <br />o Brightwood Hills rolled out a new program – Birdies & Beverages which promotes learning the <br />game, followed by socialization. 9 women participated in the program. <br />o 24 Ed-Venture children learned kayak turns and power strokes at Long Lake Park on August 12 <br />with the help of the Rice Creek Boat Club and Ed-Venture Staff. <br /> <br />PARKS & RECREATION UPDATES If you would like to receive parks and recreation updates on a monthly basis via <br />email, you may sign up on the city website at www.newbrightonmn.gov.
