I:\Commissions - NEW FOLDER\PREC (Parks Recreation and Environmental Commission)\2016\Working Docs\2016.09.07\Did You Know Memo.doc

Memo
To: Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission
Members
From: Jason Hicks, Assistant Parks and Recreation Director
Subject: September 7 Parks, Recreation and Environmental
Commission Meeting
Date: August 23, 2016

The September 7th Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission (PREC)
meeting agenda will include the Did You Know (DYK) program. DYK is an
advocacy and education program that assists parks and recreation supporters in
sharing the benefits of parks and recreation.

DYK began in Missouri and was brought to Minnesota in late 2014. In November
of 2014, the Minnesota Recreation and Park Association hosted a workshop to
introduce DYK to parks and recreation agencies throughout the state. Three
members of the New Brighton Parks and Recreation (NBPR) attended this
workshop (Director Breuer, Commission Chair Frischman and Assistant Director
Hicks). Department staff have used DYK to tell the great things about New
Brighton Parks and Recreation starting in May of 2015.

DYK statements are based from facts. Facts can be found anywhere –
newspapers, websites, magazines, journals, news programs. While facts and
statements can easily be found, it is important to have valid facts or sources. As
an example, a study could be performed to determine what is the best indoor
playground. If only children that are coming down the slide at the Eagles Nest
are asked the question, it might not be the most valid study.

The goal of the September 7 meeting is to educate and include PREC
commissioners in this advocacy tool and have them begin to accumulate facts
and create DYK statements. With this in mind, there is a little homework for each
commission member to complete prior to the September 7 meeting. This
homework will be to find two facts that are representative of what NBPR is. An
example from the July/August issue of Athletic Business follows:
