Public Safety/Homeland Security Update <br /> <br />The Public Safety Department recently hosted the National Fire Academy class, Unified Command <br />for All Hazard Incidents. Fire and Police supervisory staff attended the course which was paid for by <br />the National Fire Academy. <br /> <br />Council Liaison <br />A. Council Report <br /> <br />Council Member Brian Strub, noted several items including the following: <br /> <br />o Council passed the preliminary budget. <br />o There was a water quality discussion on August 23. <br />o National Night Out was a “smashing success.” <br />o The West County Road E2 bridge is now open. <br />o The Minnesota Chiefs of Police and Upper Midwest Community Policing Institute have now <br />moved in to the formerly vacant space at City Hall. <br /> <br />Old Business <br /> <br />No old business <br /> <br />New Business <br />A. October 31st Meeting Date Change to October 24th <br /> <br />The October Public Safety Commission meeting date will be on October 24. <br /> <br />B. Lock Boxes for Citizens <br /> <br />Commissioner Lamp recommended continuing the discussion of residential lock boxes to a future <br />meeting <br /> <br />C. Commission Role in Public Safety Director Selection Process <br /> <br />Commissioner Lamp requested information on the ability of the Commission to provide input into the <br />Public Safety Director Position. Staff discussed with the Commission that as a Plan B City Manager <br />form of government, the City Manager is responsible for all personnel decisions. <br /> <br />D. Smart 911 Phone App <br /> <br />Commissioner Lamp requested information about the Smart 911 phone app. Ms. Paulson from <br />Allina Dispatch spoke about the technical issues regarding the variety of phone apps and the <br />importance of knowing your location when calling 911. She also spoke about NextGen911 and the <br />capabilities. Acting Deputy Director Hamdorf indicated the dispatching services were provided by
