11paof <br />the city that works for you <br />Council Worksession <br />February 14, 2017 <br />5:00 pm <br />Present: Mayor Valerie Johnson <br />Councilmember Gina Bauman <br />Councilmember Brian Strub <br />Councilmember Paul Jacobsen <br />Absent: Councilmember Mary Burg <br />Staff in Attendance: Dean Lotter, Terri Haarstad <br />Guests in Attendance: Karen Wagner, Amina Ghouse, Emily Dunsworth, Todd Biedenfeld, Pamela Axberg <br />Citv Commission Interviews <br />Mayor Johnson reviewed information from the League of Minnesota Cities provided to her by Councilmember <br />Bauman regarding how to address Consent Agenda items if there is opposition. Further discussion ensued <br />regarding how the Council would address Consent Agenda items that would be pulled for discussion. <br />Mayor Johnson stated she was looking forward to interviewing potential commission members. <br />The Council reviewed the list of questions that would be asked of the potential commission members. <br />Councilmember Strub asked how the Council wanted to address the applicant that turned in their paperwork <br />after the deadline. He preferred going forward with all of the incumbents and applicants. <br />Councilmember Bauman supported all applicants being interviewed. <br />Mayor Johnson and Councilmember Jacobsen suggested the individual that submitted their application after <br />the deadline be allowed to be interviewed, but that no further applications be accepted once the interviews <br />begin. <br />Mayor Johnson and the rest of the Councilmembers welcomed Karen Wagner. She asked Ms. Wagner to <br />provide the Council with a brief summary of her background and any involvement she has had in the <br />community. <br />Karen Wagner explained her involvement in the community was quite brief. She stated she moved to New <br />Brighton 12 years ago and has no family in town. She reported her time has been spent raising her only child, <br />who would be entering high school this fall. She indicated she works at the University of Minnesota and was a <br />Director of Administration in the Office of the General Council. Prior to being at the University of Minnesota <br />she worked for the City of Minneapolis for close to 15 years, the last four years being with the fire department. <br />She commented she spent some time lobbying for the City of Minneapolis. She stated she felt like now was a <br />time in her life where she had some extra time and extra capacity to be involved with the City. She reported <br />she was dedicated to public service and loves jobs that are purposeful. She explained she was happy to get <br />involved. <br />
