Councilmember Strub suggested the students selected for this Commission be reflective of the diversity within
the community. He was encouraged by the amount of work that could be taken on by a Youth Commission.
Mayor Johnson asked if the Council supported the creation of a Youth Commission.
Councilmember Bauman feared that youth in the community were too busy to take on an appointment to a City
Commission. She did not believe it was the Council's role to create a group in order to foster mentorships.
She stated she would rather see youth encouraged to complete service projects and to volunteer in the
community. She believed the Mayor should draft a mission statement for this group.
Councilmember Strub offered his support and believed the Youth Commission was a solid idea. He stated he
would also like to learn more about the vision or mission of this group. He believed it would benefit the group
for each of the Councilmembers to serve as a liaison.
Councilmember Jacobsen supported the idea as well and he looked forward to further discussing the mission
and goals of this group.
Councilmember Burg suggested Mr. Boatman work with the Mayor to create the mission and goals for this
group.
Councilmember Bauman stated she would like to see the school involved with this group as well.
Councilmember Jacobsen suggested several Bethel University students also be added to this group.
Mayor Johnson thanked the Council for their feedback on this topic.
Worksession adjourned at 6:20 pm
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Marohn
City Clerk
J
