He indicated the department recently brought on seven new fire fighters and they were
included in the accumulated liability. He stated one retirement was factored into the fund each year, along
with the increase that was recently approved by the Council.
Further discussion ensued regarding the Fire Relief Association's liabilities going forward into the future.
Councilmember Strub appreciated the thorough review and planning the Fire Relief Association had provided
for this fund. He was pleased with the positive statement the financials provided, along with the fact the Fire
Department was staffed with high quality individuals.
Councilmember Jacobsen asked if the fund relied on any City contributions. Schmidt explained that based on
the health of the fund, the current projections relied on no City contributions.
Mayor Johnson thanked staff for the report and stated she was very pleased with the health and proper
management of the Fire Relief Association fund.
Hamdorf commented on the City's outdoor warning sirens noting the system was in need of several updates,
which would be funded through the non -fleet fund. He reviewed the location of the two existing sirens and
noted their original intent was for them to be used as air raid sirens. He explained the City's warning sirens
were last updated in 1989 and were installed prior to 1962. He commented on the upgrades and options that
were needed for the City's warning system, along with the associated costs.
Mayor Johnson supported the proposed changes and did not believe it was a bad thing to keep the smaller
sirens within the system.
