Legislative Wrap Up —Representatives Connie Bemardy, Mary Kunesh-Podein and Senator <br />Business <br />1. Legislative Wrap Up <br />Caroline Lane. <br />Representatives Connie <br />Bemardy, Mary Kunesh- <br />Representative Connie Bemardy provided the Council with an update fiom the Legislature. She thanked the <br />Podem and Scnwr <br />Caroline Lane. <br />City Council for their strong leadership and for advocating on behalf oftheir community. She described the <br />legislation that was passed for that would benefit education, infiastlucture and the Minnesota State Real ID. <br />Senator Caroline Lane commented further on the Minnesota Real ID. She explained the minimum wage <br />would be raised in Minneapolis, but all other cities in the metro would maintain local control over the <br />minimum wage. She discussed the plastic bag ban that was considered by the State. She noted the dates <br />when special elections could be held and provided an overview on the 5G small cell towers. <br />Representative Mary Kunesh-Podein explained 2017 was her first legislative session and she appreciated the <br />knowledge she has gained fiom Senator Lane and Representative Bemardy. She stated she appreciated how <br />diverse the legislature was becoming and she looked forward to the 2018 session. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen commented on temporary family healthcare dwellings and the legislation that was <br />passed by the State. He explained that New Brighton had passed local legislation to allow these dwellings <br />within the City of New Brighton. He requested further comment on this shared effort between the City and <br />local legislators regarding the invasive species in Long Lake. <br />Mayor Johnson commented on how she testified before the House and the Senate in order to receive funding <br />for the invasive species. <br />Representative Bernard), stated there was not a lot of filnding available from the State to assist with invasive <br />species management. She explained that Minnesota was the Land of 10,000 Lakes and she believed the State <br />needed to do more to assist with the proper management of its waterways. She commented on the gram <br />funding that was available to the City to assist with this situation. <br />Mayor Johnson indicated she was disappointed that the legislature was not able to assist with protecting its <br />local lakes. <br />Councilmember Burg thanked each ofthe Representatives for their service to the community. She <br />encouraged them to continue to wor 1, on increasing funding for invasive species. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen offered his sincere appreciation for the efforts ofthe local legislators. <br />Councilmember Bauman thanked the local legislators for their efforts on behalf ofthe community, and <br />requested further information on the waterway consortium. Representative Bemardy commented on the <br />legacy funding available firm the State noting the money was available to cities that had new and innovative <br />ideas. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen was pleased the City would have a full-service license bureau in New Brighton and <br />thanked the legislators for assisting with this initiative. <br />Further discussion ensued regarding the i nportance of State and local infiastructwu. <br />Mayor Johnson thanked the local legislators for time and presentation. <br />Consent Agenda <br />Consent Aeenda <br />1.
