The Commission
approved this addition.
Commissioner Brunell stated he felt it was important for New Brighton to have a dog park like other
communities such as Shoreview and Roseville. He has also had requests from neighbors and others in
the parks walking their dogs. He shared his research: The Star Tribune did a report and 32% of
Minnesota homes have dogs. There are approximately 3,100 dogs in New Brighton. He also learned
that Minnesota is 50th in the Country for having the fattest dogs. Hansen Park’s ice rink is sometimes a
“dog park” in the summer and the tennis court is often used as a “dog park” in the winter.
The commission had a discussion and made the following motion:
MOTION BY COMMISSIONER BRUNELL, SECONDED BY CHAIR KUNESH-PODEIN,
TO ASK COUNCIL FOR PERMISSION TO RESEARCH THE POSSIBILITY OF A DOG
PARK IN NEW BRIGHTON. MOTION CARRIED.

Legislative History:
None

Financial Impact:
There is no financial impact at this time.

________________________________________
Jason Hicks
Assistant Parks and Recreation Director
AGENDA SECTION: Consent
REPORT DATE: December 29, 2016
MEETING DATE: January 10, 2017
