February 7, 2017

Terri Haarstad, City Clerk
City of New Brighton
803 Old Highway 8 NW
New Brighton, MN 55112

Dear Ms. Haarstad,

Please accept this letter and the accompanying materials as my application to serve as a
member of one of the City of New Brighton’s Citizen Commissions. I have lived in New Brighton
for over 12 years and think serving on a Citizen Commission is a great way to become involved
in the local governance of the City.

I have been a public servant for the majority of my professional life. Since moving to Minnesota
in 1997, I have been a public employee. I worked for the City of Minneapolis for close to 15
years. My experience with the City was concentrated in the areas of governmental relations
and public safety. Through my service with the League of Minnesota Cities and Metro Cities, I
have a strong knowledge of municipal issues and governance.

I am currently an employee with the University of Minnesota, where I have been for the past
five years. My duties at the University are very wide-ranging, with responsibilities in the areas
of management, budgeting/finance, human relations and technology.

While I have experience and a background in public safety issues and I would welcome the
opportunity to serve on the Public Safety Commission, I am also interested in the Parks,
Recreation and Environmental Commission. The parks are one of the greatest assets of New
Brighton and I would find it exciting to be involved in the decisions regarding the care and use
of the parks and the recreation activities of the City.

I believe that New Brighton is a strong, welcoming city. No matter, which Commission, I would
be excited to become involved in helping to shape the future of the City.

Sincerely,

Karen Wagner

Karen Wagner
