4

Eagles Nest Indoor Playground
The Eagles Nest Indoor Playground is scheduled to be replaced this fall. The current structure
was constructed in 2003 with a 10 year life expectancy. The Eagles Nest has become a place of
destination for many individuals and groups. In addition to hosting approximately 1,000
birthday parties and groups each year nearly 50,000 individual youth admissions are sold
annually with revenues of $3,803,717 since 2003.

The Eagles Nest indoor playground is designed to provide a safe, accessible, clean and
enjoyable experience for both the pre-school and school age child up to twelve years of age.
The structure has been used by over 690,000 children and is showing signs of the heavy traffic
and play. It is becoming difficult to find replacement parts for the structure as the original
manufacturer no longer supports the equipment that was originally installed. Staff has found
alternate suppliers of replacement parts to continue to operate the playground in a year-round,
fun and safe manner. Utilizing
alternate suppliers has required
excessive down time and suspended
play when repairs are necessary.

The new structure will meet the
American Society for Testing and
Materials (ASTM) F1918-121
Performance Specifications for Soft
Contained Play Equipment. The
ASTM provides the governing
standards for indoor play.

The department’s goal is to maintain
the Eagles Nest as a premier choice
for indoor play, generate new
interest, new business and remain
competitive with other recreational or amusement type facilities.

The renovation project would be scheduled during the month of September. September is the
optimal time for this process to occur. The NBCC closes to the public during the week of Labor
Day for its Annual Maintenance Shutdown. September is also the slowest month of the year at
the Eagles Nest.

Playgrounds provide crucial and vital opportunities for children to play. There is
substantial research showing the clear link between play and brain development,
motor skills, and social capabilities. All learning, emotional, social, motor and cognitive is
accelerated, facilitated, and fueled by the pleasure of play. Playgrounds that promote
different types of play are vital for a child’s cognitive, emotional, physical, and social
development. Did you know the NBCC’s 4,400 square foot indoor playground, for both
toddlers and pre-school children, is open 83 hours per week?
