Project update / status: The Comprehensive Planning process has progressed through Phase One
(Inform and Listen) and into Phase Two (Consult and Collaborate). Based on the tasks completed in
phase one, we have generated some initial directions, ideas, and concepts that we will use on
Tuesday to help envision how New Brighton can move towards its vision. On Tuesday we will look
for general feedback and discussion on the draft materials. Following Tuesday’s meeting, we will
refine the concepts and ideas and prepare them for the next phase of community engagement and
discussion, to occur during the late summer and early fall.

2. Summary of community engagement and key takeaways: The materials presented in this memo are
partly in response to and influenced by the community engagement that has occurred over the last
several months. This engagement included two community workshops (125+ participants), an on-
line interactive mapping tool and survey (approximately 50 participants), and a comprehensive
community survey (including 330 completed surveys) completed by the National Research Center. In
total, over 500 participants have provided input into the planning process. We have provided a
summary of the input from the community engagement process to date, in raw form, as an
attachment to this email. A brief summary of the engagement results has been presented, but not
discussed in detail, at the Town Hall meeting and to the Economic Development Commission and
Planning Commission. Key takeaways from the input from community engagement include the
following:

• New Brighton community members like living in New Brighton. There is a desire for New
Brighton to have a stronger community identity.
• There is a desire to have more opportunities to participate, engage, and connect with neighbors.
• There is a desire to have more experience-based retail options (including entertainment,
restaurants, and opportunities for gathering), especially for teens and young adults.
• The Park System is robust and is a great feature, but should be better connected throughout the
community, from park to park, and from neighborhood to neighborhood.
• There are multiple areas in New Brighton that would benefit from street improvements and/or
enhanced connections for pedestrians and bicyclists.
• Some areas in the community are simply in need of sprucing up or revitalization (such as the
Silver Lake Road corridor), while others would benefit from a complete re-visioning (such as the
Old Highway 8 corridor) and more “redevelopment”.
• There is general support for the existing vision statement and guiding principles, with some
simple updates and refinements.
