5

players. There are enough tennis courts in New Brighton. Not
everyone will be able to walk out their back door. The tennis courts
at Hidden Oaks are in desperate need of maintenance. There are
lots of cracks. That was another reason we were looking at Hidden
Oaks because it needs maintenance and where is the trend in
tennis or is it to have some growth in pickleball. The numbers will
show you that there is definitely a trend for pickleball. The City
should get going on that.
o There is someone who turned down petition. It is Dick Kritkowski,
1595 29th Ave NW, which is very close to the park. He is a frequent
walker with his dogs around that area. With his permission, this is
what he wrote: There is just so little use of the courts as it is now. It
is a great benefit of having a park as a neighbor, I enjoy this benefit
also. But having to put up with a little noise as people are actually
using the park, should not be a deterrent to making the park usable
for a greater number of people. With that I thank you.
 Tracy Veillette, 2908 Brookshire Lane, want to follow up with some
comments to that gentleman. I think it adds some color to know what we
can anticipate from a volume issue. With a 10x increase in usage, to me
that is scary with the noise. From 10-15 decibels to 70 and 10 times the
usage. I’m going to rethink where I’m living. That is not a livable situation.
You have houses lining that area. He understands the desire and the
need. Thank you for those numbers. That really puts it into context what
we can anticipate from a noise stand point.
 Mark Reker, 2950 18th St. NW, he wanted to clarify it. There are 6 courts,
24 people playing. Encouraged people to look at the pickleball site in
Shoreview. It is off County Road E, just west of Island Lake School. They
play from 8am – 11am. Five days a week and some play on the weekend.
They play 3 sessions during the week. Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, for a
couple of hours which allows the under 55 and under 65 crowd to play as
well. These are 25 – 30 people coming for two or three hours once a day,
sometimes twice a day. By the way, I forgot to mention that I have 60
people’s names, residents and non-residents, who would like outdoor
pickleball. In Arizona they have 100’s of players. 600 -800 pickleball
players and they will be using the courts from 8am until 8-10pm. That is
not what you will see in New Brighton. It will be people playing 2-3 hours
in the morning, 2 hours at night and an occasional pickup game between a
couple of people.
 Tracy Veillette, 2908 Brookshire Lane, commented that there is not
parking for that many people.
 Sonny Fite, 1591 Dana Court NE, Fridley resident. He and his sons play
tennis. He is supporting his friend he plays tennis with, Jason Lee, who is
a resident. Wants to explain what that court means to him. They play there
quite a bit. Sometimes there are other people playing and they will have to
wait or go play somewhere else. There is quite a bit of demand for that
court. Want to express appreciation to the Commission for having and
maintaining that court. It does increase property values and makes it a
community where people want to raise a family and I did raise my family
here. It’s the parks, tennis courts and biking trails. It’s the whole package.
Not sure pickleball fits in that equation with all the noise. Don’t know
