REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION ITEM DESCRIPTION: Consideration of Establishing a City of New Brighton Task Force: Intentional/Inclusive Community Advisory Task Force DEPARTMENT HEAD’S APPROVAL: Dean Lotter, City Manager CITY MANAGER APPROVAL: No comments to supplement this report _______ Comments attached ______ Recommendation: To discuss the creation of a City of New Brighton Community Engagement Task Force. Legislative History: None Financial Impact: None Explanation On August 31, 2017 the Mayor meet with a group of residents to discuss whether New Brighton should be more engaging with all members of the New Brighton Community. Nine people were invited and seven were able to attend. City Manager Dean Lotter and Mayor Val Johnson convened the meeting at approximately 5:45 pm to discuss the current state of community engagement in New Brighton. Topics covered included whether those in attendance even thought there was a need for more formal or informal engagement of residents in New Brighton. It was quickly decided that there was a need for a more formal and proactive approach towards creating an inclusive community. The group discussed ways in which more diverse populations could be included in community engagement efforts. It was stated that New Brighton needs something more formal, but that it should be more about sharing the table with everyone. Those in attendance shared areas of focus important for a task force to address: 1) How to continue existing and foster new partners within the three Mounds View Public Schools in our borders. It can be with district people or NB people so that we (continue to) join efforts in programs, people, and a pulse on our residents.
