6
Sense of Place
Explore and implement smaller, incremental projects in association with larger public improvement
and redevelopment projects throughout the community that focus on building and creating a sense
of place.

Results

Implement the following principles that support the creation of a Sense of Place (also referred to as
Place Making).
• Strong Public Safety presence to ensure secure, safe neighborhoods, getting people out of their
homes and interacting throughout all areas of the community.
• Creation of gathering places or destinations, whether in plaza-type environments, at a local
restaurant or bar, fraternal organizations, or in outdoor dining spaces.
• Ensuring a connection with the schools, access to personal enrichment programs, and local
sport team identification.
• Creating traffic calm environments that are walkable and bikeable with connections to public
spaces including schools, parks, public art, and City entrance monument signage.
• Creating enhanced physical connections to local business and public spaces through high
quality public infrastructure such as roads, trails, landscaping, lighting, City entrance monument
signage, etc.
• Provide local support and visibility for reoccurring public events, like Stockyard Days, a farmer’s
market, and sporting events and providing ways for local business to be engaged in these
events.
Interpretation

In an effort to ensure substance or measurable results with regard to these principles, success in
implementing these principles will be through implementation of the following amenities into public
improvement projects: monument signage, roadway improvement projects that are bike and
pedestrian friendly and provide paths, lights, wayfinding, landscaping, bussing, and trails, public art,
outdoor dining areas, music in the parks, and other enhancements to public property such as fountains,
flowers, community gardens, and raingardens.

Response

The City Council approved the EDC’s recommended principles on creating a Sense of Place by adopting
Resolution 07-006 on January 24, 2017. The EDC will provide input on the incorporation of these
principles into the Comprehensive Plan and will monitor success by taking a role in reviewing public
improvement projects.
