Street Lights

There are approximately 1,000 street lights illuminating the streets in New Brighton. The majority of the
street lights are owned and maintained by Xcel Energy and leased to the City. Included in the 1,000
lights are 363 ornamental street lights owned and maintained by the City. These ornamental lights are
generally located on Old Highway 8 NW in the Old Downtown area and Northwest Quadrant area, and
on Silver Lake Road. The City budgets approximately $158,000 annually for street light operation and
maintenance.

It is a policy of the City to install street lights at the following locations:

A. At all street intersections.
B. On all cul‐de‐sacs in excess of 300 feet in length.
C. A minimum spacing of 660 feet along all skeletal system sidewalks, bikeways, designated bike
lanes, and bike routes.
D. On vertical sags where headlight sight distance is less than the required stopping distance for the
road design speed.
E. Where unusual safety hazards exist which can be eliminated by a street light, such as railroad grade
crossings and pedestrian trail crossings.

The City will also install street lights at the following locations when petitioned for by property owners.

A. Mid‐block on alleys.
B. Mid‐block on street blocks 1000 feet or greater in length. End of
cul‐de‐sac streets less than 300 feet in length.

The petition must include all properties facing or bordering the requested
street light. All City street light installations must be approved by City Council
resolution.
