High-Quality Patient Care
And he takes great pride in practicing progressive medicine that improves outcomes
for our patients, focusing on early adoption of new procedures. “Once a new lifesaving
measure is proven to be effective, we don’t wait to implement it,” Lick says. “That
means Allina Health EMS patients have some of the top survival rates in the country.”
A NEW WAY TO MEASURE SUCCESS
As of 2017, Allina Health EMS will focus our processes on more specific goals for
shorter periods of time. Called “EMS Best: 100 Days Toward 100%,” this new approach
will replace our Care Goals.
For instance, while an annual Care Goal may have focused on the entire chronology
of pre-hospital treatment of a heart attack patient and run for a full year, an EMS
Best goal might drill down and focus on how quickly aspirin is administered to the
patient—and run for 100 days. We also plan to launch approximately three EMS Best
goals per year rather than just one. “The idea is to improve multiple aspects of our
patient care by having more than one goal for the year,” says Long. “This is a way to get
everyone exposed to learning and passion, and to connect with each other and with our
patients.”
Lick knows that just like the Care Goals, the EMS Best objectives will raise the bar for
every caregiver, every day. “We want every responder to experience success in achieving
high-quality patient care,” he says. “With EMS Best, it’s about getting back to the
basics.”
Our providers care for patients using the best
available equipment, most-effective protocols
and most-proven treatments.
Our communications center staff works closely with
the clinical services and medical direction team to
ensure that our emergency medical dispatch services
are clinically superior.
Our ACE-accredited communications
center provides dispatch services for all
of our service areas and for a number of
our community partner agencies as well.
6
