<br /> <br />Council Member Strub noted this presentation is to get a feel for what all is involved and needs to be <br />considered; budget concerns, policy questions, and the need for body cameras. Commissioner Allen <br />asked the commissioners to give their feedback to Council Member Strub and we will wait to hear <br />what the next step is in this process. <br /> <br />Updates <br />A. Citizen Corps Council <br /> <br />No report. <br /> <br />Department Reports <br />A. Human Rights <br /> <br />Director Paetznick noted he will be attending an inaugural meeting at United Theological Seminary <br />on February 9 to discuss community engagement and inclusivity; how do we reach all members of <br />our community? <br /> <br />B. Allina Health <br />Mr. Dave Matteson, Allina Health Manager of Ambulance Operations for the North Metro, shared <br />the following statistics from the year 2016 about EMS responses to the City of New Brighton: 2,011 <br />total responses, which is an average of 5.5 calls per day; 1,309 emergent responses with an average <br />response time of 7:19, with 92.9% of responses meeting the established 10:59 threshold for metro <br />communities (the standard is to exceed 80%); and 702 non-emergent response with an average <br />response time of 9:57. The top five calls included: 1) emergency room evaluation (often at skilled <br />nursing facilities, assisted-living residences, etc.), 2) sick person (top call to residences), 3) falls, 4) <br />breathing problems, and 5) psychiatric. In 2016, 74% of emergent responses resulted in being <br />transported. <br /> <br />Mr. Matteson noted that Unity and Mercy hospitals have merged into one; however, both hospitals <br />will still have ER’s. Unity will handle mental health inpatients and both hospitals will have <br />oncology. <br /> <br />C. Volunteers in Public Safety (VIPS) <br /> <br />Commissioner Allen reported VIPS had their monthly meeting on January 24 and meet again <br />tomorrow. On January 18, VIPS helped with the Red Cross blood drive where they collected 25 units <br />of blood. The next blood drive is scheduled for March 29. <br /> <br />D. Public Safety/Homeland Security Update <br /> <br />Director Paetznick noted the annual Public Safety Department meeting was held on Monday, <br />February 13, where he was able to share his vision for this next year with both Police and Fire <br />personnel. A highlight of this meeting is the awards: Traffic Safety Officer of the Year went to <br />Officer Amberg, Golden Pager award went to Deputy Fire Chief Schute; Firefighter of the Year went <br />to Firefighter Berger, and Police Officer of the Year went to Detective M. DeBoer. <br /> <br />Director Paetznick noted 2016 was busy with the departure of 5 police officers and the end of 2016 <br />and the beginning of 2017 has been busy with hiring 5 new officers.
