Councilmember Strub reported it was not the City Council's objective to replace any existing businesses. He <br />explained that the Comprehensive Plan was simply showing potential ideas or visions for the future and the <br />future redevelopment of certain areas of the City. <br />Mayor Johnson agreed and commented on the changing needs for US Bank and stated she is pleased this <br />business remains a part of the community. <br />Chairperson Nichols-Matkaiti believed the City wanted to be proactive versus reactive when it came to future <br />development in the community. Mr. Harjes described how long -tern planning could assist with enhancing the <br />viability of commercial and retail areas of the City considering how the retail market was changing. <br />Commissioner Murphy questioned how the City would approach the numerous redevelopment opportunities. <br />Planning Director Gundlach stated this would be driven by developers and land that was for sale. She explained <br />the Korean Church was a viable redevelopment opportunity and could be one of the first that would redevelop <br />since the property is currently for sale. She indicated an infill project at Silver Lake Road and Palmer Drive <br />was another area of interest in the market currently. <br />Commissioner Jones thanked staff for the thorough presentation. He stated he was unclear about how the City <br />would draft the Comprehensive Plan and requested further information on this process. Planning Director <br />Gundlach explained HKGi would complete the written document and map changes with staff s assistance. <br />Once a draft document was prepared, the public would be invited to review the plan and provide further <br />comment. It was noted the Planning Commission would be involved in this process as well, including holding a <br />formal public hearing on the plan. She reported the public must also be given a comment period of six months <br />prior to the document being adopted. <br />Commissioner Danger stated he liked the ideas presented this evening and was excited to think about future <br />enhancements that could be made to the City. <br />Chairperson Nichols-Matkaiti asked if the public provided any ideas on entertainment for youth in the <br />community. Mr. Harjes stated the public common meeting space would be a good option for youth, along with <br />outdoor improvements to the City's parks. He commented he could work to elicit more comments from the <br />public on this topic. Planning Director Gundlach stated aging buildings could also be considered for reuse as <br />restaurants or cafes. <br />Planning Director Gundlach reviewed the future timeline for the Comprehensive Plan and encouraged the <br />Commissioners to contact staff with any further questions or comments.
