Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />May 2017 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o 12 co-rec and 46 men’s softball teams play weekly in New Brighton adult leagues. <br />Participation is up 7% from 2016. <br />o 15 participants from St. Anthony Village Community Services, Roseville Parks and Recreation <br />and New Brighton Parks and Recreation visited the Festival of Nations at the St. Paul River <br />Center. Participants were free to explore the many sights, sounds, and tastes offered there. <br />o 9 ladies gathered at the Community Center to enjoy tea, treats and good conversation at the annual <br />Mother’s Day Spring Tea. Hats were available to decorate with flowers and ribbons. Each <br />participant brought a special tea cup from home and shared the story behind it. The afternoon was <br />full of storytelling and fond memories. <br />o 8 Club 55 members gathered to watch the classic musical “Singin’ in the Rain.” Pizza and <br />lemonade were provided to participants as they watched the movie on the big screen projector. <br />This classic film was an uplifting crowd-pleaser. <br /> <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o A total of 13 buoys were placed in various locations around Long Lake. The buoys main function <br />is slowing down boat traffic to reduce erosion along the shoreline. In times of high water, <br />additional signs and a red buoy is put out to indicate that no wake is allowed at this time. The no <br />wake buoys were installed on May 18 and it is anticipated they will be r emoved in early June <br />when the water level recedes. <br />o 28 Tree Contractors are currently licensed with the City. The licensing process includes receiving <br />proof of liability and worker’s comp insurance, registry and federal ID numbers and providing <br />arborist certification. The licensed contractors can be found at <br />http://www.newbrightonmn.gov/departments/parks -and-recreation/parks/forestry/ <br /> <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o The Spring editions of the After School Programs at Brightwood Hills have been completed with <br />49 students from Edgewood, Highview, Bel Air, Sunnyside and St. John’s participating. <br />o 80 children are registered for the Ed-Ventures Summer Daycare program at Freedom Park. <br />o Martial arts is held at the NBCC on Monday evenings. 49 children were enrolled in the spring. <br />o Afterschool Track at Bel Air has 115- 4th and 5th grade students participating in the program. <br />o 13 children are taking Little Swingers, Beginning and advanced tennis lessons. <br />o Over 75 parents and grandparents enjoyed the Gymnastics parent night on May 8. 58 children <br />attended the spring sampler session of gymnastics. <br /> <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o The typical park and recreation agency recovers 29% of operating expenditures through revenue <br />generation. Did you know in 2017, the Parks and Recreation Department is budgeted to recover <br />44% of operating expenditures through revenue generation? <br />o 12 of the 14 leagues hosted at Brightwood Hills have begun play for the season. The only two <br />leagues that have yet to start are the two junior programs on Mondays and Thursdays, scheduled to <br />start in mid-June. <br />o A wedding dance workshop for 6 registrants was held on May 12. Various dances were taught <br />such as the swing, waltz and slow dance. <br />o Pickleball at Highview has been suspended for the summer to move outdoors to Hidden Oaks. <br /> <br /> <br />
