I:\Commissions - NEW FOLDER\PREC (Parks Recreation and Environmental Commission)\2017\Working Docs\08.02.17\Pickleball Memo.docx

Memo

To: Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission
Members
From: Jason Hicks, Assistant Parks and Recreation Director
Subject: Pickleball Courts
Date: July 27, 2017

Pickleball courts were discussed at the June 12, 2017 PREC meeting. PREC
motioned to direct staff to look at other locations for pickleball, including noise
abatement and budgetary issues.

Current Tennis Court Locations

There are currently four parks in New Brighton with tennis courts – Hansen,
Hidden Oaks, Silver Oaks and Totem Pole. Per earlier discussions, retrofitting a
double tennis court surface was the preferable option. There are two double
tennis court locations, Hansen and Hidden Oaks.

Hansen Park
The double tennis court at Hansen is located on the west side of the park just
south of the 5th street NW parking lot. The positives for this site include the
current footprint to be large enough for a six pickleball court surface and ample
parking. Concerns include the belief the courts are regularly used for tennis, a
majority of Parks and Recreation tennis programs are hosted at Hansen and
proximity to the closest neighbor, which is approximately 170 feet.

Hidden Oaks
The double tennis court surface at Hidden Oaks is located on the east side of
29th Avenue NW. The positives for this site include the current footprint to be
large enough for a six pickleball court surface and an off-street parking lot.
Concerns for this location include a petition that was submitted by the neighbors
requesting the tennis courts to remain.

Silver Oaks
PREC recommended the single tennis court location at Silver Oaks be repaired
as a tennis court with pickleball lines being installed on each side of the net.
