I:\Commissions - NEW FOLDER\PREC (Parks Recreation and Environmental Commission)\2017\Working Docs\08.02.17\Pickleball Memo.docx

Noise Abatement

A concern that has been brought up is the noise the sport of pickleball. The main
concern has been the level of noise created from the paddle striking the ball.
Below are potential ways to minimize the amount of noise to the surrounding
area.

Location
One way to minimize the impact of the surrounding area would be to locate
pickleball courts away from neighbors. There currently is not a park that
pickleball courts could be added without the removal of a current amenity.

Equipment Restrictions
Restrictions could be set on the type of balls or paddles that can be used on the
court. Each piece of equipment helps to reduce the noise. However, without
someone enforcing the equipment that can be used, players may use equipment
that is not approved and the noise may impact neighbors or other users of the
park.

Acoustic Panels
Panels could be added to fencing to help reduce the sound levels from inside the
courts. Drawbacks to these panels include cost, increase of heat in the court
area, not transparent and wind load could affect the integrity of the fence.

Design
New courts could be designed in a manner to reduce the sound impact on the
surrounding area. This could include building a berm around the perimeter,

Budgetary Information

The City of Brooklyn Park recently approved the construction of a new, six
pickleball court facility. The total cost for this new pickleball facility is
$205,094.10. This figure can be used as a starting point for a new pickleball
facility. The number could go up or down depending on site considerations.

A quote obtained in March 2017 to remove and replace the current surface at
Hidden Oaks was for $55,500.
