Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />October 2017 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br />o Open Pickleball gym time has started at Highview Middle School gym on Tuesdays and <br />Thursdays from 5:45-8:30 pm. 31 pickleball players have attended. <br />o 7 women’s teams (49 adults) are playing class C volleyball at Highview middle school <br />each Wednesday evening. <br />o 13 seniors gathered at the community center on Thursday, October 19 to learn about how <br />the foods they eat may impact pain and inflammation in the body. <br />o 20 seniors met on October 4 to learn from Landmark CEO, John Lyons about the 30+ <br />trips offered by Landmark Tours. <br />o The senior hiking club completed their final hike and celebrated with a potluck at the <br />NBCC. The group has hike more than 60 miles together this season. <br /> <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br />o Eight students from Irondale’s 9th and 10th grade volunteered an hour of their time <br />pulling and hulling large Buckthorn branches at Driftwood Park on Tuesday, October 10. <br /> <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br />o 30 youth sports participants. Soccer camps have a total of 15 youth participants and <br />basketball camps totaling 15 participants. <br />o 130 participants in fall swim lessons. <br />o The fall version of the After School Golf Program at Brightwood Hills concluded in mid- <br />October with 32 students from BelAir, Highview and St. John’s participating. <br />o Brightwood Hills hosted their third Mounds View School District Community Education <br />cross-country meet in early October. Around 150 students; boys and girls from Highview, <br />Chippewa and Edgewood ran the 2.1-mile course. <br />o 67 children ages 3-12 participated each Wednesday in dance classes at the NBCC. <br />o Gymnastic classes are held on Mondays at Irondale. Sixty-eight children participate in <br />gymnastics ages 4-15. <br />o 37 youth and adults are participating in Karate classes at the NBCC each Monday <br />evening. <br /> <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br />o Staff levels have been adjusted during the building phase of the new Eagles Nest Indoor <br />Playground. Staff will increase once the structure reopens in November. <br /> <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br />o The Eagles Nest replacement is nearing the end of construction. Nearly 75% of the <br />construction is complete. The final two weeks will dedicate to wrapping all the posts in <br />foam and enclosing the framing with metal netting. The front wall has been <br />professionally painted and the floor areas under the structure not covered by carpet have <br />been painted by staff. A Grand Opening is scheduled to occur November 18 from 9:00 <br />am-12:00 pm. <br />o The exterior wall outside the Eagles Nest is under rehabilitation to improve the through <br />wall flashing under the windows. This work will improve and repair the walls ability to <br />shed water and provide longevity and performance to the building exterior.
