Ms. Luong stated with everything in government, there will be agreements and disagreements. However, this
was the law of the City she would be representing. She would have to follow it and then could do X, Y and Z
i to bring about change if it was something she was really passionate about.
Mayor Johnson asked how she would separate herself as a commissioner and a public citizen.
Ms. Luong stated as a citizen she would have her own opinions and beliefs and this would play into her
decision making. However, she explained she would also have to think about the collective and how her
decisions could impact the larger group she was representing.
Councilmember Allen asked what the City's biggest challenges were.
Ms. Luong stated New Brighton has an aging population and as houses turnover younger families would be
moving into the community, altering the demographics. She indicated this would give the City an opportunity
to grow. She stated this would create challenges and opportunities.
Councilmember Burg asked if she was interested in land uses and variances; diversity and accessibility;
economic programs, retention and development; the impact of recreation on the community; or the impacts of
public safety.
Ms. Luong stated she was most interested in economic programs along with diversity and accessibility. She
explained she worked with diversity issues at Target. She believed that the strength of the community was
built on how it handled inclusivity.
' Councilmember Burg asked if she was available on Wednesday mornings or in the evening hours for meetings.
Ms. Luong stated her work schedule was flexible for a meeting once a month.
Mayor Johnson requested further information regarding Ms. Luong's work at Target to address diversity.
Ms. Luong explained she was on several committees that helped drive activities and education that addressed
diversity and inclusivity.
Mayor Johnson asked if Ms. Luong had interest in serving on the inclusivity task force and serving as a
commissioner.
Ms. Luong stated she would be willing to serve in both capacities.
Mayor Johnson asked if Ms. Luong had any questions for the Council.
Ms. Luong questioned what the rest of the process would be for Commission appointments.
Mayor Johnson noted the Council would be holding additional interviews and appointments would be made at
the end of March. She encouraged Ms. Luong to reach out to the City Clerk with any further questions she
may have.
Mayor Johnson welcomed Clint Kuipers.
Councilmember Burg asked Clint to tell the Council a little bit about himself and his experiences in the
community.
