Police Officer Training and Education – Director Paetznick
Director Paetznick wished everyone a Happy New Year and provided the Commission with a
presentation on Police Officer Training and Education. He reviewed the Public Safety’s
mission statement noting there was a high priority on training and education. He described
the amount of training each officer received prior to becoming an officer along with the
training they received on a yearly basis. He noted Minnesota was the first State in the
country to require a two year degree, which means Minnesota places a high emphasis on
education. The Pathways to Policing program was described. He noted there was a large
number of colleges and universities that provide educational options for individuals pursuing
a career in law enforcement. The rigorous in-house training was discussed at length and it
was noted this program takes approximately four months. He commented on the special
training patrol officers attend and receive during their first three years of service. He
estimated each officer within the department was receiving 48 hours of continuing education
on a yearly basis. He explained how the New Brighton Public Safety Department partners
with neighboring organizations to expand its training opportunities. Special training offered
for detectives and leadership/command staff was described. He stated along with all of the
training options available, officers could also attend yearly conferences to expand their
education.
