The district’s current challenges were reviewed in detail and commented on <br />how the bonding would be used to assist the district in completing necessary improvements. <br />It was noted the improvements would be completed in three phases. He described in detail <br />the improvements that would be made to schools in New Brighton. He commented on the <br />change that would be made to school start times for 2018-19. Mr. Brown thanked the City <br />for being a great partner with the school district. <br /> <br />Discussion included: <br /> The Commission discussed the need for additional field space locally. <br /> Questions were raised on how the district will keep fields lit during the fall months <br />for school sports. Mr. Brown noted the school district was evaluating the high school <br />facilities in order to accommodate for the changes being made to school start times. <br /> The availability of housing stock in the district was discussed. <br /> The biggest issues facing the district and City at this time was the need for marque <br />flexible multi-purpose gym space and turf fields. <br /> The Commission thanked Mr. Brown for his thorough presentation. <br /> <br />VI. Announcements <br /> <br />A. Council Report – Council Member Paul Jacobsen <br /> <br />Council Member Jacobsen provided the Commission with an update from the City Council. <br />He discussed the changes coming to the United Theological Seminary noting a charter school <br />would be locating onto this campus. He commented on the development proposals that have <br />been brought forward for the old New Brighton Elementary School. He reported the Council <br />recently discussed the City’s railroad safety and crossings. He explained the 2040 <br />Comprehensive Plan has been released to neighboring jurisdictions and agencies for <br />comment. The City utility and street improvements that would be completed in 2018 were <br />described. He thanked the Commission members for their service to the City and for their <br />valuable input. <br /> <br />B. PREC Chair Updates – Kevin Fields <br /> <br />Chair Fields stated the New Brighton Farmer’s Market would open on Wednesday, June 20th <br />at the United Theological Seminary. He invited the public to visit this wonderful weekly <br />community event. <br /> <br />Chair Fields reported the July PREC meeting has been canceled. <br /> <br />Chair Fields noted the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf would be hosting a free farmer’s market on <br />Tuesday, July 24th and Tuesday, August 7th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. <br /> <br />C. Department Happenings and Upcoming Events – City Staff <br /> <br />Director Fink stated the Council approved the RISE application to have an adult daycare at <br />the Community Center. She reported the program already had 16 people on the wait list. She <br />explained the gravity rail was now installed at Lions Park and noted the surfacing was now in <br />place. She commented Brightwood Hills was able to hold all of their spring lessons and <br />stated adult leagues were in full swing. She explained visits to the Community Center were
