REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION

ITEM DESCRIPTION: CONSIDER SOLICITATION OF QUOTES FOR A PERMANENT
GENERATOR AT CITY HALL.
DEPARTMENT HEAD’S APPROVAL: Craig Schlichting, Director of Community Assets and
Development
CITY MANAGER APPROVAL:

No comments to supplement this report _______ Comments attached ______
Recommendation: To authorize the Director of Community Assets and Development to perform the following
actions:
1. Solicit quotes to purchase a Permanent Standby Power Generator for City Hall.
2. Solicit quotes to install concrete pad for generator, and all electrical connections to City Hall.

Legislative History: The City hired TKDA in 2014 and Barr Engineering in 2015 to analyze City Hall generator
requirements.

Financial Impact: This project, if approved, would be funded from the Admin Non-Fleet Fund.

Explanation: City Hall is the home of key City operations: Finance, Administration, and Community Assets and
Development. City Hall does not currently have a backup power supply. The NBCC and PS buildings have
permanent back-up power supplies and in the event of a power loss, City Hall employees rely on IT to relocate
phones/computes to the Public Safety building. Loss of power in the current case means loss of services and a large
inconvenience to staff. Staff worked with TKDA on a report to extend emergency power from the existing generator
at Public Safety, and with Barr on making improvements at City Hall electrical infrastructure to support a City Hall
dedicated Standby Generator. Staff has determined that a dedicated City Hall generator is the preferred option.

Staff will include the following as part of a permanent generator system:
Install a new transfer switch.
Install a new 125KW, 208/120V natural gas generator.
Wire and conduit from the generator to the transfer switch.
New 800 amp service entrance transfer switch
Concrete pad to set the generator on.
Tree removal and grading to set the generator south of City Hall

Costs and Funding: It is anticipated that the costs will be $80,000, and if approved would be paid from the Admin
Non-Fleet Fund.

___________________________________
Craig Schlichting, P.E.
Director of Community Assets and Development
AGENDA SECTION: Consent
REPORT DATE: May 15, 2018
MEETING DATE: May 22, 2018
