Paetznick explained he has been working on the 2019 budget. He reviewed several changes the Fire Division
was proposing to make to its fleet. He discussed the history of the Fire Division and described the growing
repair costs for the department’s vehicles. He commented on how the height of buildings within the
community have increased over time and how a new fire truck would improve safety. He described how the
Fire Division has worked to lower the City’s ISO through improved dispatching services and department
training. He noted two trucks were in need of replacement. He discussed the proposed changes and how they
would impact the Fire Division. The lead time needed for the new trucks was reviewed with the Council.

Councilmember Jacobsen asked when the next purchase was scheduled after these two trucks were purchased.
Paetznick stated this would be in 2025.

Mayor Johnson questioned if the City would be purchasing the right truck if a 10-story hotel were to be
constructed on NBE. Deputy Director Olson stated there was no ladder truck that could reach 10 stories high.
He commented the larger ladder trucks would not work in this community. He explained the proposed truck
meets the needs of the community and the way the Fire Division works.

Councilmember Burg requested further information on the fire rigs the neighboring communities have.
Paetznick discussed the rigs that were owned by the neighboring communities Fire Departments and how this
benefits the City of New Brighton.

Councilmember Jacobsen commented on the amount of money the City saved by purchasing the last fire truck
through HJC. He offered his support for the fire truck purchases.

Mayor Johnson also offered her support and stated she believed these were smart purchases.

Worksession adjourned at 6:24 pm

Respectfully submitted,

Terri Spangrud
City Clerk
