Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />December, 2017 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> Skating is an activity that offers a very wide range of recreational options and advantages. Did <br />you know New Brighton Parks and Recreation maintains seven outdoor rinks during the winter <br />months for residents to participate in hockey or pleasure skating? Visit Freedom, Hansen or <br />Sunny Square Parks and enjoy these outdoor rinks. <br /> Seven adult volleyball teams (49 players) play league games at Highview each Wednesday. <br /> 28 teens and young adults bowl on Saturday mornings at Mermaid Lanes. The program is for <br />open to special education students and adults with physical and mental disabilities. <br /> Pickleball open gyms were held at Highview School and NBPR. 66 adults attended at Highview <br />and 63 adults attended at NBCC. <br /> 49 seniors from New Brighton, Roseville and St. Anthony visited the Minnesota Orchestra for a <br />Holiday music and storytelling show featuring Kevin Kling and the Minnesota Orchestra. After <br />the show the group enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Wilde Café in Minneapolis. <br /> Eleven seniors brushed up on their driving knowledge while earning a valuable insurance <br />discount at the 4 hour AARP Safe Driver Refresher Class on Monday, December 11. <br /> Premier travel company, Collette Tours presented their National Parks of America trip to New <br />Brighton Community Center users on Wednesday, December 6th. This twelve-day trip show <br />encompasses 6 national parks and serval other significant landmarks. <br /> On Tuesday, December 5, Choice Connections presented valuable information to help seniors <br />age in their own home. Each attendee left the seminar with booklets to help them create a plan <br />A and B for their living situations as they age. <br /> Skating season is here! Freedom Park opened on Dec. 23, and Hansen and Sunny Square Parks <br />opened on Dec. 26th. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> As little as 10 minutes in nature, two or three times per week can lead to mental restoration <br />benefits. Did you know park trails are plowed after snowfall? Take the opportunity to walk <br />through your local park today and help improve your mental health. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> The children’s holiday dance program was held at Highview on December 6. 66 children <br />performed tap and ballet holiday dances with over 250 parents and friends in attendance. <br /> 68 children attended the gymnastic parent night at Irondale school. Parents had the opportunity <br />to see the skills that the kids had learned throughout the session. <br /> 52 children attended martial arts classes each week at the New Brighton Community Center. <br /> 53 children participated in swim lessons at Highview Middle School in December. <br /> 26 children attended Sunday basketball camps at the New Brighton Community Center. <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br /> Cornerstone Reformed Church is a new recurring church rental that has reserved space at the <br />NBCC for Sundays in 2018. <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br /> Despite being closed for 2.5 months for the construction of the new Eagles Nest, a total of 1,016 <br />birthday parties were hosted in 2017. <br /> 107 groups visited the Eagles Nest in 2017.
