Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />August, 2018 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> Summer adult softball tournaments were held in August. 38 teams (456 players) had the <br />opportunity to use the new softball field at Lions Park. <br /> Fall adult softball started August 13. The fall league includes twenty-six teams (312 players) using <br />lighted fields at Freedom and Lions Park through the first week in October. <br /> 14 seniors gathered at the NBCC for the annual Summer Luau on the Patio. The group shared their <br />travel stories and enjoyed Hawaiian food and music. <br /> Club 55 launched a weekly Cribbage Club on Fridays 9am-12pm adding to the 10 established <br />weekly groups. <br /> 50 seniors from New Brighton, St. Anthony and Roseville shared a bus to Lake Minnetonka for a 3- <br />hour boat tour around the lake. The group enjoyed a delicious lunch onboard. <br /> 15 seniors gathered at the NBCC for an hour-long presentation from Gentle Transitions. The <br />seminar taught seniors how to effectively downsize and prepare for the move from home to <br />apartment living. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> Parks and Recreation staff completed treatments on large ash trees located on City property or <br />boulevards for emerald ash borer. Three staff members, led by the City Forester, treated 198 <br />large ash trees in just over four weeks. An additional 137 ash trees were left untreated due to <br />declines in health, poor quality or various other issues. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> Summer youth league sports with NBPR included 174 soccer league participants, 131 t-ball league <br />participants and 59 volunteer coaches. <br /> Summer youth sports camps had 200 total participants including 46 basketball participants, 110 <br />soccer participants, 29 t-ball participants and 15 flag football participants. <br /> The summer 2018 aquatics program had 244 swimming lesson participants. <br /> New preschool Adventure classes were held on August 13 and 23. Seventeen 3-5 year olds <br />attended Super Hero Training camp and Surf’s Up activities. <br /> 36 participants attended karate classes in August. <br /> 57 children attended Dance classes in August. <br /> 32 children learned tennis skills at Pike Lake and Hansen Park Tennis Courts. <br /> 264 children attended field trips to the following locations this month: St. Louis Water Park (51) <br />Kayak Lessons Long Lake (60) Crystal Cave Tour & Gem Panning (59) Zero Gravity Trampoline Park <br />(47) Urban Hike (47) <br /> Ed-Venture summer daycare provided 1,100 days of childcare in August. <br /> Brightwood Hills held its 48th Annual Junior Golf Tournament on Monday August 6 with 31 <br />participants. This marked one of the smaller turnouts in recent years with the pre-tournament <br />favorite capturing the trophy. <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br /> The Summer Playground Program provided affordable, creative and active programming to 103 <br />children at three different parks throughout the summer.
