Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />September, 2018 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> 82 adult softball games were scheduled this month for men’s and Co-Rec teams. <br /> Pickleball open gyms will be starting on Tuesday and Thursday, September 25 and 27 at <br />Highview Middle School Gym from 6:00-8:30 pm. <br /> 26 teens and young adults with physical and mental disabilities are participating in Adaptive <br />Bowling at the Mermaid Bowling Lanes on Saturday mornings from 9:15-11:30 am. This program <br />has been running for more than 25 years. <br /> 741 participants are registered for group fitness from SilverSneakers Classes to Cardio Strength <br />and Zumba! <br /> More than 160 seniors attended the ThrivExpo on Thursday, September 20. 37 vendors <br />participated and 3 seminars took place during the event. <br /> 11 seniors learned how to safely and effectively use their smartphones in a Smartphone <br />Workshop presented by Ray the Computer Guy. <br /> 9 seniors are registered for the Historic Duluth trip on September 27. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> New Brighton Lions Park recently saw two different beautification and environmentally friendly <br />projects completed. A Boy Scout and a Girl Scout each planted a pollinator garden in the park. <br /> Staff has started trimming trees in alleyways to allow passage of vehicles and snowplows in <br />these areas. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> Youth gymnastic programs were moved to Saturday to accommodate the later release times for <br />Irondale High School. 49 children are attending the program from 9am-Noon. <br /> 66 children, ages 3-11 are attending Wednesday Jazz, Tap and Ballet dance classes at NBCC. <br /> 18 children are enrolled in beginning and intermediate tennis lessons at Hansen Park. <br /> 259 Students are enrolled in American Red Cross swim lessons at Highview Middle School Pool. <br /> 37 children are learning kicking, punching and blocking techniques in Martial Arts classes at the <br />Community Center each Monday evening. <br /> The After School Golf Program at Brightwood Hills burst out of its seams with a record 24 <br />participants this fall. The program runs for 5 weeks and includes golf, a snack and a beverage. <br /> 227 children are participating in youth sports leagues over 204 participants in 2017 for an 11% <br />increase in Soccer and Flag Football participation. <br /> 69 Youth are currently enrolled in sports camps ranging from Soccer to Basketball. <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br /> Since implementing online reservations for the Eagles Nest, there have been 153 online <br />reservations for weekend birthday parties. In an effort to expand that to an even larger group, <br />the staff is working to create the availability for weekday birthday party reservations in the near <br />future. <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br /> The annual NBCC shut down occurred September 4-7. The major projects accomplished include: <br />o Remodel of Copy Room <br />o Addition of a new work station <br />o Carpet replacement in the Park and Recreation offices
