Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />October, 2018 <br /> <br />IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> 26 adult softball teams (312 players) participated in the fall softball program. An end of season <br />tournament was added this year to expand the league from 5-6 weeks. <br /> A “new” Ukulele class was offered in October. 6 adults and teens are taking music classes. <br /> 31 teens and young adults are bowling on Saturday mornings at Mermaid Bowling Lanes. This <br />adaptive bowling program is for participants who have received special education services <br />through the school district. <br /> Beginner Line Dancing started on Oct. 9. There are five participants attending at NBCC. <br /> Six women’s volleyball teams (48 players) registered for league play at Highview Middle School. <br />PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> Twelve students from Irondale High School volunteered an hour of their time pulling and hauling <br />large Buckthorn branches at Hidden Oaks Park on October 16. <br />FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> 16 youth participated in fall tennis lessons. <br /> Tap, jazz and ballet dance classes are held Wednesdays at NBCC. 65 children ages 3-11 attend. <br /> Gymnastics has been moved to Saturdays this fall. 53 children are learning basic skills on the <br />bar, beam, vault and floor exercise mats. <br /> 7 participants enjoyed the preschool Halloween Party on October 28. <br /> Session 2 of Little Tigers Martial Arts started on October 22. The class is for children ages 3-6, 21 <br />children are attending classes at NBCC. <br /> Kickers Karate classes are offered on Monday evenings. 12 children are enrolled in lessons. <br /> 183 youth enjoyed soccer and 43 youth played flag football at fields throughout New Brighton <br />and in the partnering cities of Roseville, Mounds View, Fridley, Shoreview and Arden Hills. <br /> A total of 35 volunteers helped coach flag football and soccer teams this fall. <br /> 254 are participating in swimming lessons so far this fall with two sessions remaining. <br /> 95 youth ages participated in soccer camps at Hansen Park and Highview Middle School. <br />o With one more session beginning shortly, 22 youth are learning basic basketball skills at <br />NBCC. <br /> Brightwood Hills completed the After School Program in mid-October with the largest number of <br />participants for a fall session with 23 kids. <br />SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br /> “Works” and “Cake n’ Play” Birthday Party packages have been discontinued. It is anticipated <br />the more popular “No Frills” package will easily absorb these discontinued options. <br /> The Holly Day Boutique wrapped up their fall sale after spending two weeks at NBCC. The <br />boutique is a long-standing rental group that brings in additional foot-traffic to NBCC and offers <br />visitors a chance to begin their holiday shopping. <br />SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br /> Pickleball Lines at Highview School are being repainted for adult Pickleball leagues. <br /> Brightwood Hills again collaborated with Community Partners with Youth hosting golf lessons in <br />October. The weather limited it to two visits this fall and two other visits are intended to be <br />made up in the spring. The program utilizes the George Waters Memorial Grant awarded by the <br />Minnesota Section PGA.
