Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />November, 2018 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> 31 teen and adults are enjoying adaptive bowling at Mermaid lanes on Saturday mornings. <br /> 11 participants enjoyed Swing, Salsa and Line dancing at the NBCC in the fitness studio. <br /> Women’s Volleyball is played at Highview School on Thursday evenings, 7 teams are competing. <br /> On November 26 and 28, ten seniors gathered at the New Brighton Community Center to learn <br />defensive driving skills and earn an insurance discount through the AARP Smart Driver Class. <br /> On November 27, five seniors learned from a Home Energy Squad representative about how to <br />make their homes more energy efficient. <br /> A series of tech help classes was offered to seniors this fall. On November 6, the class showed <br />how to manage streaming services to access movies, TV shows and music on various devices. <br /> Seven Club 55 members gather at the NBCC for a screening of Mamma Mia Here We Go Again. <br /> More than 80 seniors from the New Brighton, Roseville and St. Anthony communities traveled <br />to Mayowood Mansion for a holiday day trip in November. <br /> On November 13, 14 New Brighton seniors headed to Northeast Minneapolis for an afternoon <br />mini trip to Hazel’s for lunch the unique antique shop, Antiquified. <br /> Staff met with PREC Committee to share to present youth, adult and teen programming. <br /> 64 individuals participated in water aerobics classes at Highview pool. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> The creek bed and surrounding area was trimmed at NBCC. The trimming removed the <br />volunteer elm, box elder and vines that had taken over the area. The trimming exposed <br />desirable trees planted in 2011, including river birch and tamarack. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> 95 youth joined fall soccer camps on fields in New Brighton and Highview Middle School. <br /> 29 youth learned to dribble, shoot, pass, pivot and more in basketball camps at NBCC. <br /> 275 youth and adults learned to float, glide, swim, jump, blow bubbles and more this fall <br />through swimming lessons at Highview Middle School. <br /> 6 individuals enrolled in safety training and employment preparation through our Lifeguard <br />Course and Water Safety Instructor Aide course. <br /> 65 youth ages 3-11 attended dance classes at the NBCC on Wednesday evenings each week. <br /> 53 children, ages 4-14, participated in Gymnastic classes on Saturday mornings in November. <br /> 31 children, ages 3-15, are taking martial arts training on Monday nights at the NBCC <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br /> Adult Pickleball Open gyms are held at Highview North Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays. <br />Permanent Pickleball lines are new this year. <br /> Brightwood Hills Golf Course closed for the season on November 8 with the covering of the <br />greens. This brings to a close one of the shortest golf seasons in recent memory at 195 days. <br /> The Michael Walker Clubhouse at Brightwood Hills hosted the Rice Creek Boutique from <br />November 23-December 2. The boutique has a new owner but continues to be successful. <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br /> Continual maintenance and repairs take place at NBCC. One visible repair that will be occurring <br />is the replacement of gasket materials and aluminum battens for the seven skylights.
