3

April 1, 2018

Dear Commissioner,

Congratulations on being appointed by the Mayor and City Council to serve on one of the City’s commissions. We
appreciate your interest in serving the residents of New Brighton and hope you enjoy the experience!

City Commissions play an important role in local government operations. Policy issues and topics come up from time
to time that the City Council will need input on and having advisory commissions composed of residents is one ave-
nue for the City Council to get that support. You will be participating in meetings supported by city staff that will
influence and affect final City Council decisions on a variety of issues. Depending on your commission assignment
you may weigh in on decisions affecting land use, business growth and development, expansion and maintenance of
recreational infrastructure or even matters that directly affect the safety of our residents. In other words, the work you
do as a volunteer commissioner will have an impact on the quality of life in New Brighton,

In an effort to help with your transition into serving as a commissioner, city staff has assembled a packet of
information and will discuss it with you in an initial orientation. You will find information about the City, its
organizational structure, roles and responsibilities and more. You will learn about laws that govern how public meet-
ings can be conducted as well as about how data and privacy laws affect you now that you are a city commissioner.

When you have questions, need assistance or feel you want more training, please don’t hesitate to contact city staff.
Whether it is the staff that directly supports your commission, the City Clerk or the City Manager, we are all here to
help!

Thank you again for your time and dedication to your community.

Respectfully yours,

Dean Lotter,
City Manager
