Fire Division Apparatus Overview
•Original 2009 plan shifted replacement cycles so that new
apparatus was purchased every four-years
•This required some to be deferred up to five years
•Advancements in National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) standards necessitate replacement due to
obsolescence and safety issues (i.e., three-point safety
harnesses for all seated positions, anti-lock brakes &
engine retarder to improve stopping abilities,
lighting/visibility improvements, etc.)
•Minimal resale value for retired fire apparatus (example:
$12,000 for former Engine 494 replaced at cost of
$550,000 for new unit)
