the budget. <br />Mayor Johnson questioned what the City could do with more money and still remain in line with what other <br />cities are doing. She encouraged the City Council to not be afraid of the numbers. She stated she was proud of <br />the way the City was operating and did not believe New Brighton could continue to move forward with large <br />cuts. She commented it was exciting to think about what the City could do if it had additional dollars <br />available. <br />Councilmember Allen understood the City had some lean years, but he appreciated the direction the Council <br />has taken to keep New Brighton moving forward in a strong financial manner. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen stated he was extremely proud with the decisions the Council was making and <br />commented the City was moving towards debt free streets by 2025. He thanked staff for providing the City <br />Council with a firm foundation to keep the City moving forward. Lotter commented on the benefits of long- <br />term planning and how the City will see gains in the near future once it reaches debt free streets. He <br />commended the Council and previous City Councils' for staying the course. <br />Councilmember Burg discussed how the economy ebbs and flows every 20 years and stated she was pleased <br />that the Council was planning accordingly. She explained she was also very proud of the City Council for <br />staying the course. <br />Councilmember Dunsworth stated she appreciated the thoughtful decisions that have poured into the City's <br />budget and CIP over the years. <br />Mayor Johnson commented her only concern with the budget was the request from the Public Safety <br />Department for a part-time officer. Davitt reported the Council would be further discussion the budget on <br />September.4th and September l lth. She explained the Council would have to approve a preliminary tax levy <br />prior to September 30th. She noted staff was planning to have the Council approve the preliminary levy on <br />September 11 to <br />Lotter asked how the Council wanted to proceed with the budget and questioned if it was necessary to hold the <br />September 4th meeting. <br />Council consensus was to address the budget on September 11th at the worksession and for the preliminary tax <br />levy to be approved that same evening. <br />Worksession adjourned at 6:19 pm <br />Respectfully submitted, <br />Sandra Daniloff <br />Deputy City Clerk <br />
