New Brighton’s Future in Economic Development Discussion
Gozola stated periodically it is important for the City to take a step back from current activities
and reassess whether it is on the correct path to achieve its goals and objectives. Several
definitions of economic development were offered and discussed in detail. With completion of
the 2040 Comprehensive Plan, this is an ideal time to revisit the Economic Development
Commission’s goals and objectives as outlined in code, within the new comp plan, and as
identified with the City Council in 2015. Staff reviewed all three areas of guidance with the
Commission and lead a discussion on where Commissioners would like to go moving forward.
Discussion included:
• Sense of Place and Community Outreach were important to the EDC.
• Competition with neighboring communities was discussed, along with the importance of
having healthy coordination regarding economic development with these neighboring
communities.
• A list of Ramsey County contacts was reviewed with the Commission.
• The EDC was interested in having more signage at entrance points to the City of New
Brighton, while also creating events or destination points in the community.
• The EDC discussed the importance of reaching out and making connections with local
business owners.
• The EDC commented on housing issues in the community.
