He hoped the committee would have a large
number of voices all pushing in the same direction in a structured manner.
Commissioner Frischman asked if staff had utilized a steering committee approach in the past.
Assistant Director of Community Assets and Development Gozola commented on the experiences
he had with his previous cities and noted the steering committee approach was quite successful.
Commissioner Frischman stated she would like to have additional partners in the community be
allowed to have a voice on the steering committee. Assistant Director of Community Assets and
Development Gozola supported this recommendation. He explained he had applied for a grant
with Ramsey County to assist with studying the Silver Lake Road corridor portion of this project.
Commissioner Frischman questioned if this project would be forward thinking. Assistant Director
of Community Assets and Development Gozola reported this could be one of the goals within the
document.
Commissioner McQuillan stated in his neighborhood there was a senior housing development on
the corner. He asked why this was allowed. Assistant Dire ctor of Community Assets and
Development Gozola explained he was unfamiliar with the history of this project and noted the
property may have been rezoned. He indicated staff would be taking a very thorough look at the
City’s zoning map through the City Code rewrite process.
Chair Nichols-Matkaiti asked if any zoning districts will be eliminated. Assistant Director of
Community Assets and Development Gozola stated this would not occur, but noted several new
zoning districts may be added.
Commissioner Melquist commented he liked the idea of a steering committee to approach this
project and asked if the Planning Commission would review the committees work or
recommendations. Assistant Director of Community Assets and Development Gozola reported
this would be the process that was followed.
Chair Nichols-Matkaiti asked if the age of each portion of the code was known by staff. Assistant
Director of Community Assets and Development Gozola indicated this information was available
to staff. He noted an index would be created for the old City Code and would correlate this
information to the new City Code.
Commissioner Biedenfeld questioned if the open Planning Commission seat would be filled prior
to April of 2020. Assistant Director of Community Assets and Development Gozola stated it was
his hope this seat would be filled prior to April and noted the City Clerk was seeking candidates.
Chair Nichols-Matkaiti inquired if the Planning Commission would be meeting in December.
Assistant Director of Community Assets and Development Gozola indicated the group would be
meeting in December.
