<br /> <br />Sports and Aquatics Specialist Weiler introduced herself to the Commission. She indicated <br />she has been in her new position for the past month and a half. She reported she had a <br />background in youth programming and aquatics. She noted she graduated this past spring <br />with a degree in Recreation Management with an emphasis in Community Recreation. She <br />stated she previously worked for the City of Golden Valley. <br /> <br />Recreation Supervisor Larson reported she was in charge of all field reservations for adult <br />and youth programs. She descried the aquatics lessons that were provided at the <br />Community Center, which included instructor aid programs and lifeguard training. She <br />noted her department has been focusing on water safety. <br /> <br />Sports and Aquatics Specialist Weiler reviewed the youth sports programs being offered by <br />the Community Center, noting these included basketball, soccer, t-ball, baseball, and flag <br />football. She explained she was considering a Grandparent and Me program, a fishing club <br />and water safety for local apartment complexes. <br /> <br />Discussion included: <br /> The Commission encouraged the City to consider hosting masters swimmers classes <br />for adults. <br /> The Commission recommended additional programming be considered for cross <br />country skiing in the winter months. <br /> The Commission supported the City offering additional water safety training at the <br />local apartment complexes. <br /> The Joint Powers Agreement between the City and Highview Middle School for the <br />pool was discussed. <br /> The Commission welcomed Ms. Larson and Ms. Weiler to the City of New Brighton <br />Parks and Recreation Department. <br /> <br />VI. Announcements <br /> <br />A. City Council Report – Council Member Mary Burg <br /> <br />Councilmember Burg provided the Commission with an update from the City Council. She <br />discussed a recent life-saving event that occurred at Garden View Apartments in July. She <br />noted the young man was underwater for 17 minutes and was brought back to life and has <br />no brain damage. She commented on the inverted CPR technique that was use d. She <br />commended the Parks and Recreation Department for looking into offering pool safety <br />lessons at the local apartment complexes. She explained the City Council was working to <br />hire a new City Manager and was working with DD & Associates to complete this task. She <br />provided further comment on the process that would be followed for the interviewing and <br />hiring process. She anticipated a new City Manager would be hired by April. She noted the <br />Council would be holding a strategic planning retreat on January 10th. She commented on <br />the ice castle that would be constructed in Long Lake Regional Park. She reported the <br />Council would be holding a Truth in Taxation Hearing on Tuesday, December 9th.
