Council Worksession January 22, 2019 5:00 pm Present: Acting Mayor Mary Burg Councilmember Graeme Allen Councilmember Emily Dunsworth Councilmember Paul Jacobsen Absent: Mayor Valerie Johnson Staff in Attendance: Devin Massopust, Dean Lotter Guests in Attendance: Nasreen Fynewever, Tim McQuillan ICTF Presentation Massopust reported Nasreen Fynewever was in attendance to give the Council a presentation on the work completed by the Inclusive Community Task Force. Nasreen Fynewever, Chair of ICTF, thanked the Council for their time. She explained the ICTF was formed after the Council passed a Resolution in October 2017. She reported the Council was interested in learning what they didn’t already know. She discussed how task force members were selected and noted this group was tasked with finding ways to make the City more inclusive. She provided further comment on the six Council directives. She reviewed the learning activities the group went through and described how the community was broken down into sectors. She described how each member of the task force explored these sectors. She commented further on the report that was drafted by the IC TF describing the recommendations from the task force in detail. It was noted the group was recommending the City Council allow the task force to continue. She explained race relations were not deeply discussed and could be delved into further by the task force. Acting Mayor Burg thanked Ms. Fynewever for all of her hard work with the task force and for the thorough report. Councilmember Dunsworth thanked Ms. Fynewever and the task force members for all of their efforts. She questioned how the Council could find more diverse individuals to participate in this group. Ms. Fynewever suggested the Council refer to the contact list for potential candidates. Councilmember Allen thanked the task force for all of their efforts. He stated he was very pleased by the recommendations that were made by the group and supported the Council discussing these further. Councilmember Jacobsen asked if the task force explored how other cities managed their task force groups. Ms. Fynewever explained some cities had human rights commissions, while others has a task force with an assigned staff member. She recommended New Brighton have a task force with an assigned staff member. Tim McQuillan, ICTF member, stated it would be important for the Council to consider, if this group were t o move forward, that the City seek the right diverse people for this task force.
