<br /> <br /> The fact that seniors would be left out of this bill as they did not contribute to HSA’s. <br /> It was noted the proposed bill would cover health club memberships and personal <br />trainers. <br /> The Commission offered their support to the PHIT Bill and recommended the City <br />Council direct staff to draft a letter of support for the bill. <br /> The benefits of offering scholarships to low-income youth, adults and seniors. <br /> <br />Katherine Hyke, resident of St. Anthony Village, commended the City for discussing this bill <br />and believed it would greatly benefit seniors and obese youth. She asked how the <br />community could rally behind this bill. Director Fink commented on the numerous ways the <br />City can communicate to the public regarding this bill and its positive aspects. <br /> <br />Motion by Matt Johnson, seconded by Quade, to recommend the City Council direct staff to <br />draft a letter of support for the PHiT Bill. Motion carried 9-0. <br /> <br />VI. Announcements <br /> <br />A. Council Report – Council Member Paul Jacobsen <br /> <br />Council Member Jacobsen updated the Commission on the actions the Council took at their <br />last meeting. He noted the Council discussed solar arrays at a worksession meeting. He <br />reported the Council Chambers were being remodeled at this time. He commented on a <br />parcel the Council purchased noting this property would be included in the old New Brighton <br />Elementary school redevelopment project. He explained the Council would be holding their <br />Truth in Taxation meeting on Tuesday, December 11th. Lastly, he discussed the recent <br />purchase of Jones Lake. <br /> <br />B. PREC Chair Updates – Kevin Fields <br /> <br />Chair Fields stated PREC would meet next on January 2, 2019. He understood that there <br />were no items to discuss and asked if the Commission would like to move the meeting to <br />January 9th or February 6th. The Commission supported canceling the January meeting. <br /> <br />Chair Fields discussed the upcoming Health and Fitness Expo which would be held on <br />Saturday, January 12th from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Community Center. He noted there <br />would be a community bonfire at Freedom Park on January 26th. He encouraged the public <br />to participate in these great community events. <br /> <br />C. Department Happenings and Upcoming Events – City Staff <br /> <br />Director Fink commented on a brochure that was recently completed by staff. She noted the <br />brochure was downsized by eight pages from last year but noted more information was <br />included. She stated Jodelle Olson would be retiring after 41 years of service to the City of <br />New Brighton. She was proud to report Pat Tuma would be inducted into the USSSA Hall of <br />Fame on Friday, January 25th. She explained 15 truck loads of trees and brush have been <br />cleared away from the Community Center wall. She indicated a contract was signed with <br />WSB to assist in completing a Strategic Comprehensive Plan for the Parks Department. She <br />briefly provided numbers of visitors for the Eagle’s Nest and noted the site had nearly <br />250,000 visitors in 2018. She stated she was extremely happy with the new play structure.
