REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Consider Agreement for Prosecution Services for 2020-2022 with GDO Law
DEPARTMENT HEAD’S APPROVAL: Anthony S. Paetznick, Director of Public Safety
CITY MANAGER’S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this report ___ Comments attached ___

Recommendation: Approve the agreement for prosecution services with GDO Law for 2020-2022.

Legislative History: Current City Prosecutor Thomas R. Hughes aligned with GDO Law in 2018.

Financial Impact: Monthly retainer is $6,879, which remains the same as the 2019 cost.

Explanation: After 41 years of service to the City of New Brighton as the municipal
prosecutor, Tom Hughes recently notified us of his intent to retire at the end of
2019. For the past two years, Mr. Hughes has been strategically aligned with
GDO Law. New Brighton officers and support staff have been pleased with the
services received from GDO Law. Public Safety leadership met with GDO Law
Managing Partner Robb L. Olson to discuss a continuing relationship and Mr.
Olson has provided the attached agreement for prosecution services. Staff has
checked references with other municipalities that use GDO Law for their
prosecution services and Mr. Olson & his staff are highly recommended. Mr.
Olson has proposed a three-year contract term effective January 1, 2020
through December 31, 2022 with no cost increase from the current flat fee
monthly of $6,879.00. The City Attorney has reviewed the new agreement.

________________________
Anthony S.
