REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Consider a resolution establishing a fire lane for public safety purposes over a
private entry into the apartment complexes south of 6th Street SW
DEPARTMENT HEAD’S APPROVAL: Anthony S. Paetznick, Director of Public Safety
CITY MANAGER’S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this report ___ Comments attached ___

Recommendations: Approval of the prepared resolution to denote both sides of the
northernmost entryway into 800, 900, 1000, and 1100 County Road D
West, as a Fire Lane.
Legislative History: None
Financial Impact: Preventative.
Summary: In recent years, it has come to the City’s attention that parking is occurring on
both sides of the northernmost entryway into the New Brighton Village,
Bramantes, Sage Park, and New Brighton View apartment complex. In
addition to the lack of a driving lane when parking occurs, the existing
entryway is in very poor condition which could result in damage to both
public and private vehicles if/when the entrance is ever used for emergency
access. Despite multiple requests of the four apartment complexes to take
steps necessary to clean up and repair this access, no progress has been
made to correct the situation.

Per City Ordinance, fire lanes may be established by the City Council when it
is determined that access to buildings for public safety purposes can only be
maintained by prohibiting vehicle parking on one or both sides of a public or
private road. Both the City Manager and the Director of Public Safety are
recommending the City Council adopt the proposed resolution establishing
the entirety of this entryway as a fire lane to preserve this access point into
one of the City’s most densely populated rental properties.

Agenda Section: VII
Item: 3
Report Date: 11/14/19
Council Meeting Date: 11/26/19
