June 9, 2020 Page 4 of 4 <br />commented he was disheartened by the events that occurred in Minneapolis and how this has <br />negatively impacted the entire community. He stated he was committed to ensuring that New <br />Brighton never lost its identity because united we stand and divided we fall. He thanked the <br />members of the community for giving New Brighton its identity. He encouraged those <br />interested in serving as an election judge to visit the City’s website or to contact City Hall for <br />further information. <br />Mayor Johnson <br />Mayor Johnson reported Bill Grossman, the Mayor of New London, passed away on May 26th. <br />She explained she brought this up because the City’s antique car run goes from New London to <br />New Brighton each year. She discussed the tremendous effort Mayor Grossman put into the <br />antique car run and stated he would be dearly missed. She sent her condolences to the <br />Grossman family and to the New London community. <br />Mayor Johnson reported the EDC would be meeting on Wednesday, June 10th at 7:30 a.m. She <br />reiterated the City needed election judges for the upcoming primary and general elections. She <br />reported absentee ballots would be available for both elections. <br />Mayor Johnson explained the events of the last two weeks have been outrageous and tragic. <br />She thanked her fellow Councilmembers for offering comments. She indicated these were <br />hard and difficult times and noted the City of New Brighton would not be shying away from <br />the difficult topics or conversations that need to be held. She appreciated the comments from <br />Councilmember Fynewever and how her voice mattered. She thanked Councilmember <br />Jacobsen for reiterating that all residents in New Brighton make up this community. She <br />thanked Public Safety Director Paetznick for setting up a listening platform on the City’s <br />website to allow residents to provide the City with feedback. She stated she was looking <br />forward to moving this City forward in the right direction. She sent her condolences to the <br />Floyd family and offered her commitment to all people of color in the City of New Brighton <br />that this issue would be addressed and would be addressed right. <br />Adjournment <br />Mayor Johnson adjourned the meeting at 7:07 p.m. <br />___________________________ <br /> Valerie Johnson, Mayor <br />ATTEST:______________________________ <br />Terri Spangrud, City Clerk <br />Adjournment <br />The meeting adjourned <br />at 7:07 p.m.
