recommend Council consider including in a future design (or designs if the City wants to
have multiple styles based on the importance of the entry point).
Discussion included:
 The Commission supported a simple, nicer looking branded sign being installed at entry
points, with monuments installed at heavily trafficked entry points.
 It was noted the signage within the City’s parks was being rebranded at this time.
 Staff explained the City’s new logo would be installed in the new sound walls along I-
35W.
 A Commissioner believed it would be cost effective to have an electronic reader sign at
several entry points.
 A Commissioner found the additional signs (Tree City/Green Step City) to be clutter.
 Councilmember Allen suggested wayfinding signs for points of interest (Community
Center, City Hall, Long Lake Park) also be considered.
C. Open to Business Update
Gozola gave an update on OTB performance over the first six months of 2019, and reviewed
the pending expansion of services to the entire County and what that will mean for New
Brighton. Over the first seven months of 2019, the City was on pace for its lowest utilization
of OTB since the program began in 2016. This is likely a factor due to service hours provided
(bi-monthly office hours rather than monthly office hours), the City focusing on other
priorities (finalizing the comprehensive plan and facilitating the review of Midtown Village),
and OTB concentrating on the pending County-wide expansion of their services. Staff is
pushing for the new Ramsey County office for OTB to be located in our available office
space on the first floor of City Hall. This would bring a bit of revenue into the City, but more
importantly would draw aspiring business owners to New Brighton when meeting with OT B
staff and ideally make us a potential first-look location for these new enterprises.
Gozola reviewed with the Commission the items that would be discussed at the November
EDC meeting.
VII. Adjourn
Chair Zisla adjourned the meeting at 8:50 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,

Ben Gozola
Assistant Director of Community Assets and Development
