REQUEST FOR COMMISISON CONSIDERATION

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Business Outreach/City Marketing Updates
DEPARTMENT HEAD’S APPROVAL:
CITY MANAGER’S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this report ___ Comments attached ___

Recommendations:  Recommend any final changes/additions to the business outreach letter
 Discuss proposed next steps/changes to the program

History:  In 2015, the EDC spent significant time discussing Business Retention &
Expansion (BR&E) efforts, and ultimately recommended contracting with
Open to Business (OTB) as our main push in this regard.
 In 2019, the EDC revisited this initiative, and discussed options for outreach
including personal visits by both staff and commission members to our
various businesses throughout town. Ultimately it was determined that an
initial outreach letter should be sent allowing business owners to “opt in” to
any City efforts. Direction was given to staff on needed letter updates.

Summary:  The EDC is asked to review the Final Draft version of the business outreach
letter provided herein. We have been waiting our turn for an audience with
the City Council to present both this letter and zoning code update project,
and anticipate having that opportunity soon. Changeover at the City Manager
position and other Council priorities have delayed our progress in this regard.
 Work on assembling the final mailing list is also still on-hold due to the loss of
our talented intern Maame Yourk towards the end of 2019. We were hopeful
to have Maame’s roll filled by this time, but our target candidate elected to
go in a different direction. New applicants are currently being sought, and
the position will (hopefully) be filled in the near future.

Agenda Section: VI
Item: 2
Report Date: 02/25/20
Commission Meeting Date: 03/04/20
