Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />January, 2019 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> 250 people visited the Health and Fitness Expo. Early January is the perfect time to host the <br />event as people are motivated by their New Year’s Resolutions. This year’s event had something <br />for everyone, from youth sports demos to Silver Sneakers Fitness classes and from vendors <br />showing their products to speakers sharing health and fitness information. <br /> 41 adults are toughing the winter weather and staying fit with water aerobics classes at <br />Highview Middle School this winter. <br /> Seven women’s volleyball teams are playing league games at Highview School each Wednesday. <br /> Twelve senior participants were brave enough to join the Mystery Lunch trip. Many guesses <br />were made as to where the lunch spot was going to be, but no one besides the trip chaperone <br />knew they were going to Brasa Premium Rotisserie in St. Paul. <br /> 23 seniors participated in an AARP Smart Driver Refresher Class. Participants not only learned <br />safe driving skills, but they also obtained a discount on their car insurance for taking the class. <br /> An average of 16 pickleball players are playing at Highview each Tuesday and Thursday evening. <br /> Twenty-nine men play volleyball at Highview School each Wednesday evening. <br /> Adaptive bowling is held at the Mermaid Lanes, 30 young adults participate each Sat. morning. <br /> 8 seniors gathered at NBCC to learn important estate planning tips from Safe Harbor Estate <br />Lawyers. <br /> NBCC hosted the first session of a monthly Stress Management lead by RN Arleen Hollenhorst. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> Parks Maintenance and Public Works staffs have been cleaning up over grown areas throughout <br />the City. The project has focused on trimming trees near ponds and waterways throughout the <br />winter. Recently, staff has been removing trees from along the edges of ponds that are <br />undesirable or will be future hazards. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> At Highview Middle School on Monday nights there are 29 youth participating in soccer lessons, <br />and half of them are over the age of 7 learning intermediate and advanced soccer skills. <br /> This winter, two youth have signed up to be Instructor Aids with New Brighton Aquatics and <br />learning to help teach Red Cross swim lessons, keep children safe in aquatics environments, and <br />gain early work/volunteer experience. <br /> There are 31 youth from grades K-5 participating in basketball skills lessons on Sundays at NBCC <br />this winter- 18 of them are in the K-2 age group learning basic teamwork and basketball skills. <br /> At the pool, there are 59 youth enrolled in swimming lessons on Tuesdays, 75 on Thursdays, and <br />73 on Saturdays. In addition, there are 7 youth enrolled private swim lessons and 3 adults taking <br />adult group swimming lessons. <br /> Youth dance classes are held on Wednesdays at NBCC, 56 children ages 3 through 12 <br />participating. <br /> Gymnastics numbers have increased to 65 for the winter session. Classes are held at the <br />Irondale gymnastic gym on Saturday mornings. <br /> Martial arts classes are held at at the NBCC on Monday evenings for children 3 years through <br />adult with 42 participants each week. <br />
