Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />March, 2019 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> The Islamic Resource Group presented “What you always wanted to know about Islam and <br />Muslims” The one hour presentation was given to 36 people in attendance. <br /> 41 individuals beat the cold and participated on water aerobics classes at Highview. <br /> 30 teens and young adults participated in Adaptive Bowling at Mermaid Lanes on Saturdays. <br /> Guitar/Ukulele classes were held at the NBCC on Tuesdays. Four participants attended. <br /> A Country Dance Workshop was held March 29. Class included the Country Waltz and Two-Step. <br /> Seven women’s volleyball teams are competing in the end of season tournament at Highview. <br /> Pickleball Open gyms were held on Tuesday and Thursdays, from 6-8:30pm at Highview School. <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> A Canadian Goose Management Presentation was hosted on March 5. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> This winter, 4 youth have enrolled in the instructor aid program to gain responsibility, early work <br />experience, and learn to work with kids alongside our aquatics team. <br /> Over March 14-16, New Brighton Parks and Recreation held a lifeguard class and certified 5 new <br />lifeguards- one of whom will be working with our aquatics team. <br /> In March, 66 youth ages 3-14 participated in soccer lessons with New Brighton Parks and <br />Recreation, learning basic soccer skills as well as teamwork and sportsmanship. <br /> Gymnastics was held Saturdays, 9 am – Noon, at Irondale, 68 children attended each week. <br /> Martial arts classes were held on Mondays at the NBCC, 39 children, teens and adults attended. <br /> 63 children, ages 3-11, participated in dance classes on Wed. evenings at the NBCC. <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br /> Two Parks Maintenance staff members attended the Certified Playground Safety Inspector <br />Training. This training is a nationally recognized safety training provided by National Recreation <br />and Parks Association to help keep playgrounds safe and well maintained. <br /> One Recreation Supervisor attended the Revenue Development and Management School. It is <br />targeted towards agencies who rely in part on generating revenues by user fees. Specific class <br />sessions included Revenue Development and Management, Development Partnerships and <br />Community Sponsors, Cost Recovery Plans, Finding Cost Savings and Efficiencies and Finding <br />Additional Revenue Generating Ideas. <br /> The outdoor ice rink season concluded on March 3 with a total attendance of 7241 visitors at <br />Sunny Square, Hansen and Freedom. The attendance was greater than previous winter seasons! <br /> With the conclusion of outdoor ice and clubhouse rental seasons, attention can return to golf <br />and league registration at Brightwood Hills. An anticipated opening around April 15 would not <br />be that far off from a “normal” open date of April 7. <br /> SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT <br /> This winter, 20 Parks and Recreation staff members participated in American Red Cross <br />CPR/FA/AED classes at the New Brighton Community, where they gained the skills they need to <br />respond in future emergencies. <br /> AARP is providing basic tax preparation service to the community at NBCC through April 15 this <br />year. Tax return preparers are unpaid volunteers and assist individuals regardless of income or <br />age and within the scope of their training. Appointments can be made by calling 651-633-8333.
